Creating a system that allows for mobility introduces several challenges. The computer, tracker, power supplies and audio system each introduce problems of weight, bulk, heat conduction and comfort, and these are problems that must be solved in a manner that is sensitive to the aesthetic being followed. As well, a major design change is needed to replace the foot pedal which is used when a DIVA is operating from a sitting position. Currently we are developing a fabric contact point located on the left side of the costume. When the left thumb comes in contact with the contact point it turns off the speech synthesizer. Thus, the gesture of moving the hand away from the body corresponds with the beginning of speech, a gesture that is often found in daily conversation. |
