DIVA Meeting July 29, 2009 Sid, Bob, Cam, Karl, Johnty, Allison, Zoe, Marguerite, Martin, Adriano Johnty: reported that they are more confident about knowing what is going wrong with the wired connection failures. Has managed to isolate part of the problem to the operating system.. It turns out that one of the USB ports shares a hub with the keyboard and mouse. When that port is involved in a crash the keyboard and mouse crash as well. Appears to be the serial driver causing the problem. Has not found any complaints about the current serial driver, but it is about 3 years old. Johnty will look for an up-to-date driver to see if that will fix the problem. For the wireless devices it turns out that there are two different chipsets. The new Broadcom chipsets do not work with the Firefly Bluetooth chips. The connection remains but the data stream disappears. Another problem is that if we have a lot of devices connected – three or four – eventually one of them crashes. A single device will not crash. Marguerite: Macleans wants a photoshoot on Friday, Aug. 31. Costume needs to be steamed. Need to purchase a travel clothing steamer. Sid will buy if we can get one from London Drugs. Sid will ask photographer to bring backdrops. Shoot will probably take place in the Linguistics lab. Marguerite wanted to know if the new tuned stops are loaded on the system. Allison will check to see if that is what is happening. Also wanted to have a session with Sid regarding the actual sounds resulting from the accents. Marguerite and Sid will coordinate on a meeting time and will let Karl know so he can attend. Data collection: Adriano and Martin: data analysis seems to be looking good. Looking at time stamping of successive data to check time differences between samples. Currently the time differences appear to be small, which is encouraging. When the system doesn’t crash. For testing Marguerite will do new phrases, and some of the old phrases. Bob: April 10, 2010 lecture performance for the Sonic Boom festival. Karl: lots of fiddly loose ends right now getting fixed. Karl is working on getting better audio streaming from the synth to the sound card. Once this is fixed he will be able to start working on the quality of the sound. Cam is using the threading that is supplied by Qt. This means that the threading should be platform independent. Martin: long discussion about the ability to make quantitative evaluations of qualitative events, and ways of creating and using comparative materials. Ideas floated about target audio recordings converted to synth data for comparison. This could be a very fruitful avenue of investigation for this project. |
