1st International Workshop on Biomechanical and Parametric Modeling of Human Anatomy (PMHA-2013)

Many clinicians and researchers around the world are actively engaged in research dealing with the different dynamic functions of the human body. For example, the human oral, pharyngeal and laryngeal complex is a complex biomechanical component of the human body critical for eating, breathing, sleeping and communicating. Furthering our understanding of the dynamics and function of different areas of the human body are critical to diagnosis and treatment of a variety of disorders as well as providing the ground work for understanding how people react and interact with objects in the world. Researchers and clinicians approach modeling the structures and dynamics of the human body from multiple perspectives and techniques. This workshop brings together Computer Scientists, Dentists, Engineers, Linguists, Anatomists, Oro-facial Surgeons and among others to share techniques and approaches to modeling the biomechanics of the human body and applying these models to new biomedical and human factor applications.

Important Dates:
Workshop Date: Jan 28-29, 2013
Title and Abstract: Dec 15, 2012
Paper submission date: Jan 11, 2013
Special A/V needs sent: Jan 11, 2013 (we will have video projections and speakers)
Special journal issue submission date: (to be determined - but expect 2-3 months after workshop)

Directions & Location:
The workshop is located at the Empire Landmark Hotel and Conference Centre in Vancouver, BC, Canada
*Location in downtown Vancouver

  • Closest Canada Line stop from airport is: Vancouver City Centre (1.2km); you can buy a book of 10 tickets at the 7-11 near domestic arrivals at airport to avoid the airport surplus fee ($5). YVR is considered 2 zones from downtown so you need a 2 zone ticket ($3.25) if traveling during weekdays until 6:30pm; weekends and evenings only need a 1 zone ticket ($2.50) - don't forget to validate it before you board the subway.
  • Taxi fare from airport is around $35 + tip; normal tip is around 15% these days.

Registration: To register for the PMHA2013 Workshop please download the application form, fill it in and return to Lavana, ASAP.

Final Program:
PMHA2013 Final Program (TBD)?

Current List of Attendees:
Note: please check your name is here in case we made an error.
PMHA2013 Workshop Attendees (TBD)

Internet Access Guests at the hotel are provided free internet access. As well, the conference room has wifi access.

Accommodations:
We have booked the Empire Landmark Hotel and Conference Centre for the workshop. Your registration will be used to book your room. We are coordinating room sharing as well. If you need additional nights, the hotel offers them at the conference rate.

Transportation: Both Canada Line and taxi are good options for getting downtown. Once downtown most things are walking distance, but there are a few attractions that are served well by public transit. Here's information on that.

Workshop Paper Submission

All workshop participants are expected to submit a paper for the workshop. Please use the following style templates:

If you want this to appear on the website for public distribution, you need to also download and fill in this permission form:

so we can distribute your paper. If you do not want it to be distributed, please let us know. Please use the copyright notice though so we can include it in the printed proceedings that are given to workshop participants only.

Papers are due on by Jan 11, 2013.

We are looking into one or two special journal issues as we are expecting papers to fall into more than one category that would be nicely grouped together for special journals. Currently, we have confirmed one special issue of: Special Issue of Journal of Computer Methods in Biomechanics and Biomedical Engineering (CMBBE): Imaging and Visualization it is also on Facebook.

These journals will expedite reviews for the special issue based on top papers from the workshop and in the field. Please let us know if you would like to be considered for this special issue. For the workshop, we plan to have an internal review of the papers prior to the workshop to give some time to update them before the workshop. Then, we can use the workshop for further discussion of your paper and continued refinement. Then, the papers that are ready for the special issue will have some additional time before submission to a full review. The expectation is that the papers will be in excellent shape allowing for a fairly quick pathway to appear in the special issue.

Submission deadline for Special Issue: TBD. We anticipate 2-3 months after the workshop.

Instructions for the special issues submission are at: TBD. To submit to the special issue please:

  1. choose: "Special Issue Paper" from the drop down menu
  2. when you get to the question, "Is this manuscript a candidate for a special issue?," click 'yes' and then enter the title, "TBD"

These steps will make sure it comes to the special issue editors.

NOTE: if you are willing to be a reviewer for the special issue, please contact us so we can add you to the list.
